Philips Zoom® teeth whitening is based on the application of LED light on dental surfaces previously treated with a bleaching agent, such as hydrogen peroxide, so that this light activates the agent by making bleaching effective and achieving a faster effect.
It is done by applying this bleaching agent, which is a chemical placed on the vestibular surface of the teeth by applying the Philips Zoom LED light. By means of the red-ox (reduction-oxidation) reaction, hydrogen peroxide, which is a very unstable compound, tends to separate one of the oxygen particles to obtain, on one side, water (H2O) that is stable, and on the other, oxygen (O), which remains free in the medium where it is. This oxygen joins the molecules responsible for tooth coloration, which are usually very large. Here the red-ox reaction occurs and causes the large molecules that darken the tooth to be divided into smaller molecules. When they become small, they lighten, therefore lightening the tooth. Additionally, they become more soluble and easier to remove from dental structures.
